Melancholy

One of the recruits was struck by melancholy recently. He was enraged about the long patrol hours and threw himself into the chasm.

Naturally this shook us all up a bit and sweeping changes were made to the armed forces.

Everyone was relieved of duty.

This of course meant that the crossbow squad reverted to their former status of trappers and went outside to find some game.

The game found them in the form of Ostarsid and Tislamrotik, two zombie elephants who didn't take kindly to being shot at.

We mourn their passing along with that of the recruit and order everyone indoors. Live goes on, and there's now three fewr mouths to feed.

Food has been a bit scarce lately. Due to the late sowing of the spring crop, it's just now starting to mature, one week shy of summer. The dwarves are eating it as fast as it can be pulled out of the ground.

Hopefully food production will catch up with latent hunger soon and we can begin to rebuild our stockpile.

There are horses everywhere!

They're breeding like crazy and roam the corridors in packs with impunity. These horses do us no good at all. If they were dogs we'd overjoice, but as it is there's still only two dogs and they've shown little inclination towards breeding.

Ah well, back to the farm and more endless drudgery for sake of substinance.

Eat them you fool!

You mention food scarcity in one paragraph, and then complain of an excess of equines in the next. Butcher and eat them you mollysodding fool!

Horse meat is good!

Horse leather wears well!

Horses bring nothing but disaster!

Eat them!

Remember, it's one letter from horse to whores. You want whores running around your cavernhome?

I second that!

The eating/horse resource part I mean. Though having some lovely lasses running about wouldn't be to bad.

Yes!

Yes I do.
I think they'd boost morale. Take people's minds off of the harsh conditions. Give the peasant ladies something to do with their time.

And I'm not eating the horses because I want them to breed and form a huge herd which I can then wipe out with magma or traps or any other number of fun and interesting ways to kill horses. Maybe I'll set up an arena where they can battle elephants. That would be fun.

Hmm, maybe I need to set up an arena where my dwarves can battle elephants. That'd be a good time.

Hah!

Indeed that would be a good time! That's the sort of bloodthirsty engineering I can get behind. Maybe the arena could have pressure plates triggering spiky ball and giant axe traps, that'd be top notch!

I'm way ahead of you

I just need to get these short bastards to make steel.
