Spring
Spring has arrived!
We're off to a great start here in the fields this year. The mayor pulled the lever to flood the fields on the first of Granite, and by the fifth the fields were dry and we were already at work setting up the farm plots.
We were able to overcome the stones in the doorways by having the doors removed, then reinstalled. When it came time to reinstall them, the dwarf doing the work would naturally move the stones and the doors could be shut and locked for the flood.
With more than four hundred plump helmets in the stockpiles, we should have an excellent amount of surplus food by the end of this growing season. What we really need is alcohol. More importantly we need barrels to hold it in.
We've got tons of barrels, but they're all full of food. With only one forge to make copper barrels at we simply can't keep up with food production. We need another anvil. It's the one thing we can't produce here, we must trade for it.
Trade might be a little difficult this year, the band of goblins is encamped outside our door. We're not sure why they haven't come in. The door is unbolted. We're rather looking forward to seeing how many goblins threescore stonefall traps can kill.
For a while it looked like they weren't going to make it here at all. They were being herded North by a horde of elephants, then from the Northwest came a gang of zombie bonobos. We though it would be a battle of Krogerlike proportions, but they just feinted about for a bit until the goblins could sieze an opportunity to break free and finally come to attack our fortress.
So why won't they attack? Why do they hesitate? We wish the stone's desire to crush to be fulfilled!

The river runs red with blood
A giant toad sprang from ambush in front of some recruits drinking at the cave river. They slew him and his copious quantities of blood have colored the cave river an evil shade of crimson.
The goblins left briefly then returned with more numbers. They slaughtered the elven caravan that was heading toward us and near our doors now. Maybe this time they'll be foolish enough to come inside. They're led by Elite Goblin Crossbowman Snodum Ueushu. We shall see if he be a formidable foe or not.
Unfortunately, in our eagerness to trade with the elves, we were moving items to trade into the pavilion when the goblins return. Now the order has been issued to raise the chasm bridge and there's still half a dozen dwarves on the other side. Some valuable ones too, including a metalsmith. Whatever shall we do?
Haha, Snodumb has been crushed to death by our entryway traps! At the sight of his blood, his allies turned and ran. We shall see if they can steel themselves for another assault.
They reformed behind another elite bowman and reattacked en masse. Nearly ten were killed in the entryway before the rest ran off. It looks as though we've won the day. Huzzah!
Huzzah!
Sucks to the Elve's caravan though...
Yeah
We might of got along good with the elves, having not cut any trees down for most of our existence here. They don't really like it when you cut down trees. Won't trade for anything that is made from plants or animals. We really don't have much to trade, I haven't bothered having the craftsdwarves make the usual trade trinkets out of rock and bone. All bone is made into bolts, it's great shooting goblins with the bones of their dead friends. And I don't really want all that shit lying around. Plus, trade is inherently dangerous on this map with all the zombie megafauna and goblin raiding parties about.
Gonna get a lot of bone from this last attack though. If I keep playing this fortress. The new version is not backwards compatible, and it's pretty awesome, though I still haven't figured out how to dig down yet.
oh, and one more thing
Have you gained the ability to use magma yet? I haven't noticed
Ha
Indeed we have. Some time ago actually. I've got half a dozen magma smelters and a couple glass shops and kilns too. Not enough metalsmiths to keep them all busy. I need another anvil, that's the problem.
