History of New Japan
"It was only 180 years after the Japanese had terraformed Mars that they cut contact with Earth. The stories brought by the traders who returned were not hopeful. Even the Earth born Japanese were expelled, or worse. Perhaps there was a certain prescience amongst the leaders of the new Meji empire, an anticipation of the storm that was about to be unleashed on Earth. Or maybe it was just the resurgence of the intense nationalism and cultural unity they had embraced in their attempt to master reality manifestation which caused the sudden and complete return to the self imposed isolation that had characterized their ancestors so many centuries before. Either way the stars would see whole turnings of the celestial disk before anything was heard from the red planet."

"A solemn and observant silence fell over the crowd, as was expected. Public executions had made starkly clear that life was expendable in the face of manifest consciousness. As the line of rebels advanced one more step into the gallows I turned from the masses. Seeing the daily rations of psychedelic drugs and sedatives that followed the execution of my comrades was something more than anyone could be asked to bear. These people, my people, were forced into submission by our own great nation, without warning and without cause. This new government passes out the daily rations, keeping people sedated enough to be compliant but aware enough to offer belief to the emperor's Beta-God of the week. Those that refuse the rations, that choose to think freely, are hunted down and silenced. It is a terrible term indeed for New Japan, but with the stolen god-tech and a growing rebel presence, it may soon be at an end."
